The Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands is working towards a new Dutch pensions systems on which unions, employers and government agree. The topic of the seminar was what solution this proposal offers to company pension funds.

The conclusion was that the proposal is not necessary for company pension funds. It brings about (unknown) risks to company pension funds without any upside.

Actuariële redenen voor een grondige stelselherziening

Actuarial reasons for a pensions system renewal

Mr Koopmans is actuary and partner of Lane, Clark & Peacock in the Netherlands.

From an actuarial point of view, there is no need to change the pension system. If a new syste were to be designed today it woud look different than when it was designed decades ago. The younger generation is worse of in the current system than the older generation, but it costs a minimum of 50 billion euros to correct this. There’s much debate on how to finance this enormous transfer of money between generations.

Uitvoeringsaspecten

drs. Toine van der Stee

Carrying out the pension proposal

Mr van der Stee is the executive director of pensions provider Blue Sky Group, which carries out the pension plans for Royal Dutch Airlines.

Mr van der Stee rejects the proposal for a new pensions system because it doesn’t solve a problem for company pension funds. At KLM Royal Dutch Airlines the pension plan offers possibilities to save for more pensions from nett income.

It has taken about ten years for policy makers in government, unions and employer organisations to reach an agreement and still it is uncertain i twill pass. That might have to do with the tens of billions of euros required to implement the proposal. Mr van der Stee thinks it probable that the mandatory system as we kno wit, will disappear in favour of individual, flexible pension arrangements.
